WFNY Cleveland Sports Awards- the Woofnies

Quite a battle from yesterday in the Favorite Cavalier category. Anderson Varejao came from behind to overtake Kyrie Irving as the player on the Cavs you most want to see.

Today we hand out two more awards. The first is a staff award in the category Best (non big 3) Cleveland Sports Team. There were two great candidates for this award this year. The first is the Cleveland State Men’s Basketball team. Falling a little short of the NCAA Tournament, Norris Cole and the Vikings advanced to the second round in the NIT before falling to the College of Charleston. CSU started the season on a 12 game winning streak, and finished the regular season 25-7. In the end, 3 losses to Butler (which doesn’t look too bad now) and back to back losses to Old Dominion and Milwaukee kept the Vikings away from the big dance.

The second candidate is the Lake Erie Monsters. The Monsters had a great regular season, finishing 44-28 with 3 OT losses and 5 ties. They had a 3-1 lead on Manitoba in the playoffs before dropping 3 straight. During the playoffs, the Monsters out-drew the Indians for a game. That’s fairly impressive for a minor league hockey team in Cleveland.

And the winner of the WFNY Best Non-Big 3 Cleveland Sports Team is-

The Lake Erie Monsters.

Monsters games had the Q rocking by the end of the season. Very impressive. Good team, good atmosphere.

Now it’s on to the readers’ choice award for the day. You probably saw this coming, but I think it will be quite a battle. The category today is Favorite Current Cleveland Brown.
